I got McAfee free for a year when I bought my last laptop, renewed it once but the next time I just went ahead and got Avast Free that everyone was talking about. Been using that for year+ now and never had any issues.

I don't think paying for an antivirus is neccessary. Some says torrenting antiviruses is not a practical thing, because they can be unsafe, but I strongly disaggree with this. If you download it from a trusted torrent site, like nCore, the whole thing is fine.

If someone doesn't trust in such torrent sites, there are nice free antiviruses too, like BitDefender or Avast/AVG.

Malwarebytes has been a really good AV for myself over the last 5 years or so, really recommended, and it's free

Never. I try to surf the web safely, downloading only the files that I know for sure and not clicking on the links that looks suspicious. Using Avast and don't have any problems yet.
